Brantley County Middle School FBLA

 Wins Top Awards at State Competition

Congratulations to the members of the BCMS FBLA Chapter on their recent awards at the 2013 State Leadership Conference in Perry.  Chapter awards included the coveted SLC Sweepstakes Award, 1st place in Chapter of the Year, 1st place in Chapter Scrapbook, 1st in American Enterprise Project, 1st in Local Chapter Activities Report, 3rd place in Community Service Project, 5th place in Largest Local Chapter Membership, and Gold Level Chapter.

Nicolas Horne, who served this past year as the Georgia FBLA-Middle Level Vice President, received the highest award that a Middle Level member can receive, the Outstanding GA FBLA-Middle Level Member Award.

Individual and Team Event Awards included:  1st place in Battle of the Chapters with team members Emma Spradley, Jordan Thomas, and Skyler Crews; 1st place Business Computations – Andrew Spradley; 1st place Keyboarding Applications II – Briana Carter; 1st place Business Document Concepts – Briana Carter; 2nd place Business Document Concepts – Whitley Fabrizio; 2nd place Electronic Leadership Portfolio – Kaylie Hunter; 2nd place Keyboarding Applications I – Whitley Fabrizio; 2nd place Computer Slide Show – Jordan Thomas, Emma Spradley, and Lyndsey Johns; 3rd place Computer Slide Show – Catilyn McDowell and Lila Byers; 3rd place Web Page Creation – Skyler Crews and Emily Harris; 4th place Web Page Creation – Makenzie Johns and Lauren Lee; 4th Creed – Nicolas Horne; 4th place Keyboarding Applications I – Erin Holcomb; 5th place Desktop Publishing – Mahnoor Farooq and Marissa Bennett; 5th place Internet Concepts – Nicolas Horne; 6th place Employability Skills – Erin Holcomb; 6th place Public Speaking – Marissa Bennett; 6th place Spreadsheet – Emily Harris; 8th place Keyboarding Applications I – Jessica Woodard; 9th place Impromptu Speaking – Rebekah Street; and 10th place FBLA Concepts – Makenzie Johns.  Other competitors included Kelley Griffin, Brittney Lynn, Alison Palm, Kali Perkins, Amber Smith, and Cody Wirth.

Kaylie Hunter was elected to serve as the 2013-2014 GA FBLA-Middle Level State Reporter.

BCMS FBLA Adviser Ruby Ann Sawyer stated, “I am so very proud of the hard work and dedication of these students.  They have spent countless hours preparing for their events and it paid off. There were over 1200 students from 82 schools across Georgia who competed at this state level.  I feel blessed to have members who represented Brantley County Middle School so well.”

The students were accompanied to the event by Adviser Ruby Ann Sawyer and chaperones Dr. Tim Sawyer, Ginger Hunter, and Katy Horne.

BCMS Herons and Lady Herons Win Tennis Championship

The Lady Herons and Herons Tennis Teams of Brantley County both won the tennis conference championship on Friday.  The Lady Herons picked up their first conference tennis championship in school history.  Also, Brantley County’s boys’ tennis team won its third straight conference championship. The day began at nine o’clock with the Lady Herons Tennis Team of Brantley Middle facing Waycross Middle in the semifinals.  At #2 singles, Lady Heron Emily Miller won in dominating fashion with an 8-0 score and Lauryn Boyd won 8-3 at #3 singles.  Winning the clinching match, Caitlyn Morgan of Brantley won a close match at #1 singles with a score of 8-6.  Brantley’s #1 doubles duo of Macie Allen and Lacey Cummings were winning 3-2 when the match was clinched, and at #2 doubles Jacee Thomas and Karsyn Rowell were up 4-1 when it was clinched. 

The next semifinal match of the day featured the Herons and the Jackets of Jeff Davis.  At #1 singles, Kyle Chapman won 8-3 for Brantley.  Brantley’s #3 singles player Grant Jacobs won with an 8-0 score in his match.  Winning the clinching match was #2 singles player Kade Chapman who won 8-6.  The #1 doubles team of Luke Courson and Jackson Whisenant were in the lead 4-0 when the match was clinched. 

 The Lady Herons were up against the Lady Bears of Pierce for the girls’ championship match, and Brantley won 3-0 to win the championship.  The first two matches finished were the #2 and #3 singles matches.  Brantley’s Emily Miller won big with a score of 8-1 at #2 singles.  Lady Heron, Lauryn Boyd, took care of business as well at #3 singles with an 8-1 win.  The clinching match came from Brantley’s #2 doubles duo of Karsyn Rowell and Jacee Thomas, and they defeated Pierce with an 8-2 score.  The Lady Herons were winning at the other two matches as well when it was clinched.  Brantley’s Caitlyn Morgan was up 6-3 at #1 singles and the #1 doubles team of Lacey Cummings and Macie Allen were winning 7-3. This win capped an undefeated season for the Lady Herons as well as the school’s first conference championship in girls’ tennis.

The last match of the day for the boy’s championship was between Brantley and Pierce, and Brantley won the championship with a 3-2 score.  The Herons’ first win came from its #2 doubles team of Nick Alligood and Brantley Sloan, who defeated their opponents with an 8-3 score.  Brantley’s #1 doubles team did not disappoint as well winning a close match with a score of 8-6.  Kade Chapman, #2 singles player for the Herons, lost a tough fought match with a score of 4-8.  #1 singles player Kyle Chapman also lost a very close and hard fought match falling to Pierce 7-9.  In the biggest comeback of the season and perhaps the biggest match of his young tennis career, Brantley’s #3 singles player Grant Jacobs came back from a 1-5 deficit to win seven games in a row to win 8-5 and clinch the championship for the Herons.  This championship is the third the Herons have won in the past three years.
